Through Detlefsen Nel & Associates' formal affiliation with LPL Financial, we have direct access to the highly regarded financial planning team at LPL. The Financial Planning Group assists us with all aspects of financial planning for our clients. They are also available for conference calls with us and our clients upon request.


Kevin J. Fox, CFP®, ChFC, CLU, AIF®

Vice President, Financial Planning Group

Kevin started his career with MetLife in 1986 as a Group Representative marketing employee benefits to large corporations. Kevin was promoted to Branch Manager and was responsible for running two different sales offices for over five years. In 1998, Kevin was promoted to Life Wholesaler position for the Western Zone. In 2000 he joined the San Diego office as Agency Director where he managed over 30 financial advisors and helped convert the agency from a traditional insurance office to a fee based planning agency. Kevin joined LPL Financial in January of 2008 to manage the Financial Planning Group's systems and operations.

Kevin has experience in the following areas: Comprehensive Financial Planning, Tax Savings Strategies, Estate Planning, Tax-Sensitive Investment Strategies, Large Portfolio Investment Strategies, Selective Benefits Plans for Business Owners and Key Employees, Business Continuation Planning (Buy-Sell Funding Arrangements), Qualified & Non Qualified Retirement Plans.

Kevin holds a Bachelor's of Science degree in Political Economics from the University of California, Berkeley. He is a CERTIFIED FINANCIAL PLANNER™ certificant and holds the designation of Chartered Financial Consultant (ChFC) and Chartered Life Underwriter (CLU). He is the past president of the National Association of Life Underwriters local association and an instructor for the University of Phoenix teaching Financial Planning courses. Kevin holds series 6, 7, 9, 10, 63, and 65 securities licenses and CA Life Insurance.

Tolen Teigen, CFA®, CFP®, ChFC®, CASL®

Assistant Vice President, Financial Planning Group

After graduating from Northern Arizona University with a degree in Finance, Tolen started his career as an advisor. During this time, Tolen earned the designations of CFA® (Chartered Financial Analyst), CFP® (Certified Financial Planner), and CASL® (Chartered Advisor for Senior Living) and also became a member of the Million Dollar Round Table (MDRT), an organization that recognizes the top 5-7% of financial advisors. Tolen believes that continuous education is a prime ingredient in helping advisors and, in doing so, is currently pursuing the AEP (Accredited Estate Planner) designation. Tolen is FINRA securities licensed 7, 66, 86, 87, and 24, and also holds a California Life and Health Insurance license.

Tolen joined the LPL Financial Planning Group in 2007 with the primary focus of supporting LPL advisors with complex case design involving retirement planning strategies. During his time in the Financial Planning Department, Tolen has expanded his role to include support and development of WealthVision, the LPL Financial preferred financial planning software. With this new role, Tolen is responsible for training LPL advisors on the software and is an integral resource for creating enhancements and making modifications to the program.

In his spare time, Tolen enjoys playing the bass trombone as well as pursuing his interest in photography. Tolen, his wife Sally and their two sons, Tyler and Austin, were born and raised in San Diego and find it a perfect place to call home with their two dogs Reina and Ansel.

Susan E. Lerner, CFP®, CLU®, CMFC®

Planning Consultant

Susy specializes in comprehensive financial planning, investment strategies, real estate ownership and financing issues, estate and philanthropic planning. She works with advisors who are adding fee based planning and hourly consulting to their business models with practice development and management ideas.

Susy joined the Financial Planning Group in 2008. Her experience includes over 15 years as a successful independent financial planner/OSJ principal, and over 7 years working for financial services corporations as Field Director, Sales Manager, Manager of Wealth Management Solutions, and Regional Financial Planning Director, plus 3 years in residential lending. Her client base included professionals, business owners, and retirees.

She is a CFP® Practitioner (#2741), a Chartered Mutual Fund Counselor®, and a CLU®. She earned a BS and M.Ed. from the University of Maryland at College Park. Susy holds Series 6, 7, 63, 65, and 24 licenses, is a licensed California Life and Health Insurance Agent and a licensed Real Estate Agent in California.

Susy is an active member of the Estates and Trusts Committee of the Rady Children's Hospital Foundation, and a member of both the Financial Planning Association and the Estate Planning Council of San Diego.

Keith Cervenka, CFP®

Planning Consultant

Before joining the Financial Planning Group, Keith had a successful 15 year financial planning career with Ameriprise Financial (formerly American Express Financial Advisors). His client base consisted of mostly engineers, scientists, and retirees. Financial planning was at the heart of his business. Keith created comprehensive financial plans that examined all six areas of financial planning.

Keith has strong practice management knowledge for helping advisors transition into providing financial planning services for their clients.

He also worked with clients building the "Tax Triangle" and creating income streams for his retired clients within the "Triangle." Keith used a variety of software including FAS, NaviPlan, Morningstar, and Allocation Master in his practice.

From the sale of his own Ameriprise financial planning business in 2009, Keith can assist in exit planning questions and would be a good source to advisors considering selling their own businesses. For those advisors who have client's in the construction industry, Keith has over 15 years experience in the construction Industry and would be a good resource for planning strategies.

He is a CERTIFIED FINANCIAL PLANNER™ certificant and has Series 7, 63, and 24 licenses. He also holds a California Life and Health license.

Craig Horner, CFP®, ChFC®

Planning Consultant

Craig Horner has over 20 years experience in the financial planning industry. Craig is a CERTIFIED FINANCIAL PLANNER™ certificant, and Chartered Financial Consultant® who achieved Senior Advisor status, representing the top 5% of American Express Financial Advisors during his 15 years there, and more recently, the Patriot level within LPL Financial Services and has Series 7, 63, and 24 licenses. He received the Mentzer Academic Scholarship to study math and music at the University of Iowa and subsequently taught computer music at the college level. Craig is also a member of Mensa.

During his career he focused on estate and business planning, helping clients to establish charitable trusts, Family Foundations, ILITs, GRATs, and FLPs. Having a special needs child, he became an expert in Special Needs Trusts and the accompanying planning. He also worked with businesses in setting up qualified plans and executive compensation arrangements. Another area of focus was in end-of-life planning, maximizing the retention and transfer of assets to succeeding generations.

Craig served three terms on the Board of Directors for the International Association of Financial Planning and has belonged to the Planned Giving Roundtable since 1989. He's served on the planned-giving boards of ten charitable organizations and served as President of the Board for the Southern Caregiver Resource Center. He has frequently been quoted in articles and has made numerous presentations regarding retirement, financial and estate planning.

Craig plays the piano professionally several times a week with his wife Deborah on sax and flute. He is an accomplished runner and routinely wins his age class in local 5k and 10k running events.

Laurie Burkhardt, CFP®, MBA

Planning Consultant

Laurie brings more than 30 years of experience in financial services to LPL's Financial Planning Group, where she serves LPL financial advisors from our Boston office. Prior to pursuing a career shift into financial planning, Laurie spent 20+ years in various management positions in financial management and strategic planning at MetLife. She obtained the CERTIFIED FINANCIAL PLANNER™ certification in 2005.

Laurie managed the financial planning services offering for high net worth and small business clients of a Boston-based financial services firm with more than 200 advisors for nearly 5 years. She subsequently launched a new financial planning process for investment clients of a New England regional bank with more than $1.5 billion in assets under management.

In her prior financial planning roles, Laurie established each of the firm's financial planning strategic priorities and provided comprehensive financial planning services for clients. She trained financial advisors to contract and deliver financial planning services and partnered with advisors to deliver plan recommendations. She oversaw paraplanning staff to analyze client financial situations and utilized multiple financial planning software platforms to propose planning solutions.

Laurie has significant expertise in helping clients to consider the options and trade-offs implicit in striving to achieve multiple goals simultaneously. She enjoys assisting advisors to become more comfortable charging fees for their professional advice and to use the financial planning process to generate increased revenue as clients seek to implement recommendations discussed during planning meetings.

Laurie earned a BS from Harvard University and MBA from Boston University. She holds FINRA Series 7 and 63 licenses and a Massachusetts Life and Health license. She is an active member of the Massachusetts chapter of the Financial Planning Association.

Hank Lobel, CFP®, MBA

Planning Consultant

Prior to joining the Financial Planning Group in 2012, Hank was the Managing Director for Mercer Advisors in Columbus, OH. In this role he was responsible for the financial planning recommendations of over 100 business owners, specializing in the medical and dental community. Hank started his career with Ameriprise Financial (formerly American Express Financial Advisors) in 2004 as a licensed Financial Advisor and was promoted to Branch Manager in 2006, where he was responsible for the training and development of first year advisors. In 2008, Hank went to TD Ameritrade as an Investment Consultant to high net worth individuals.

In 2003, Hank received his Bachelor's of Arts in Business Administration from Concordia University, Irvine. In 2010, he received his Masters of Business Administration from Chapman University. In addition to his FINRA Series 7 and 66 licenses, Hank is a CERTIFIED FINANCIAL PLANNER™ certificant and is a level 2 candidate for the Chartered Financial Analyst designation.

Hank has extensive experience working with clients in the following areas: Comprehensive financial planning, employer-sponsored retirement plans, proactive tax management and asset allocation strategies.

Thomas Luong

Client Services Consultant

Prior to joining the Financial Planning Group in November, 2011, Thomas worked in the operations department at LPL Financial. Thomas manages our day to day submissions and processes financial planning engagements.

Thomas graduated from San Diego State University, obtaining his Bachelors of Arts in Business Administration with an emphasis on Financial Services. While attending San Diego State University, Thomas landed his first internship in the financial services industry with The Retirement Group.

At The Retirement Group, Thomas was designated as their Financial Analyst intern. Thomas spent most of his days assisting Financial Advisors and their clients. In addition, Thomas would assist in training new hire interns. The Retirement Group is where Thomas realized that financial planning is the career that he wanted to pursue.

After graduating from San Diego State University, Thomas was recruited by MassMutual as a Financial Representative. During his time at MassMutual, Thomas assisted his clients with risk management and had the capability to offer a variety of insurance products. What he loved most was Life and Long-Term Care insurance.
